Stygian Blade : Hades
This was a really fun commission project. I’m a big fan of the game and love the art style Supergiant put together for this, however the Stygian Blade is depicted with major differences between the official art posters and in game assets. Being the president of the Volpin Props fan club I heavily referenced the design he came up with for the official replica for Supergiant. It’s awesome and you should check out his website.
This was “scratch modeled” in Blender and not my usual re-meshed game asset.
The main blade is basically a laser cut acrylic sandwich in a big clamshell frame. The acrylic portions are two 1/8” laser cut clear sections, front and back, ordered from SendCutSend. In hindsight I should have just gotten clear red. They are back painted with Createx Candy blood red and the center is back painted with Autoborne Silver and then Autoborne Black sealers. This ensures the center is opaque and the edges are translucent red. Clear resin printed runes are glued into the slots. They have a raised center and are painted with translucent green (same as the eye and bottom gems). This “sandwich” sits in a really long frame which Chad aka Hoku of Hoku Props printed on his Cr-30 belt printer. It’s worth mentioning that the diagonal layer lines of the Cr-30 are significantly stronger than printing this vertically. Two equal length ws2812b addressable led strips are mounted on either side of the acrylic. This is sealed with clear construction adhesive and seam welded with a soldering iron.
The red wreath is also Candy blood red over Autoborne silver printed in pla in halves. These are mounted with pins into the center skull.
The skull houses two standard green 3mm led’s (for the eyes) with resistors and a 3x AA battery pack and switch. It also houses a central support 1/2” aluminum tube which extends through the handle. It has multiple layers of off white (white-gold/white-orange) and stippling/shading over a white auto borne sealer base. These top coats are weathered away with a wet melamine sponge which I was really happy with. This process is really easy to control.
The handle is also PLA and a final 3mm led is mounted to the bottom gem. Partially wrapped with an adhesive back leather strip.
I’m really happy with the final results but the sword is extremely top heavy so it feels off, however considering the design I guess that’s accurate?
Despite being 12hrs deep into Hades I have not yet beaten …Hades… the client has informed me that the gun is in fact not the weapon of choice and it is in fact a skill issue…
